An outing to Farrs house and gardens, the home of the renowned furniture designer John Makepeace, who will be there to greet us on arrival. This is a unique opportunity to talk to the designer about his prestigious projects and see some of his prototypes at close quarters. During our visit, we will be able to view not only this historic house with its contemporary interiors and collections of paintings, sculpture, ceramics and furniture, but also the two-acre walled garden, which for a number of years has been open as part of the National Gardens Scheme.
After lunch at the nearby Sawmill Café on the Mapperton Estate, we visit Lytes Cary Manor, which is maintained by the National Trust. Among the Manor’s fascinating features are a 14th century chapel and the 15th century Great Hall. Its Arts-and-Crafts style garden is an inspiring combination of outdoor rooms, topiary, statues and herbaceous borders.
